My trip to Hicksville was...

...to say Hi and welcome you to our web site. Although a few areas are still "under construction", keep checking back to see what new stuff and other news we've added.

And thanks to those who signed Guestbook v.1 (which has sadly crashed and burned)... we really did appreciate your nice comments. Thanks! (At least I have now learned how NOT to fry a guestbook!)

Yours in all things Hicksvillian, Kathy & Ken

My trip to Hicksville was...

...very good and interesting. A job well done from loyal fans, that's for sure ! It's a good thing, since the hicksters mailing-list is a little bit overloaded with personal thoughts that aren't so important to read, I'm sorry to say.

Someone, tell Dan that Canadians ears are open for a gig in Montreal or Ottawa ! Please.

Thanks again for a site that will be very usefull and informative.

My trip to Hicksville was...

Frickin' Fabulous. There needs to be a billion more Dan sites. I have just stumbled upon these web sites, I mean where the hell have I been...under a rock!!! I sent an e-mail to Steve Ramirez and hope to be on a mailing list soon. I have seen Dan about 30 times only since about 1991. He is a pleasure to listen to and my mission in life is to bring as many people as I can to each and every one of his shows. Thanks for the cool website and lot's "o" info. Now if I can just get in touch with Dan about those 1993-4 tapes from the Sir Francis Drake Hotel from the 4 day gig. Anyone know about those???? I will be in touch soon, it would be nice to hear from fellow Dan Fans. Should anyone be interested, I have some cool photo's and articles that I would love to share. Happy Halloween! Anita L. I searched through the archived shows for Bayside Jazz but didn't find any of their appearances. I did find Blossom Dearie and listened to her rendition of "My Attorney Bernie". Wow! I just located an archived show with the CJB and started playing the show. Now, I'm going to: 1)finish typing this; 2)power off my PC monitor; and 3)crawl into bed and listen to CJB for the very first time! -- Thanks youse guys!

Well, just a darned shock. Last time I saw Dan was in Tampa, maybe 12 years ago. Last album I found by Dan was "Shootin' Straight", while hanging around Grandfather Mountain, in North Carolina, a few years ago. Curiosity kicks in, now that I'm hanging around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and I find out that he was here in January. Ouch - missed a session. I was hoping to see more on available CD's, etc.

Thanks you. I am happy to know that there are others who feel as I do about Dan Hicks. And, I'm not speaking as a fanatic or obsessive devotee ... I finally understand why an old friend was trying to expose me to the music several years ago. He's no longer stomping the terra, but I checked out a show in 1993(?) at the <a href="http://www.bellyup.com/">Belly-Up Tavern</a> in Solana Beach, CA, where I was working and realized the favorite songs on the "Muzak" tapes the owner made were Dan's. Also, in case you're listening (Marianne does !!) sorry about playing "Vinny..." when you walked into the bar that day, I know it pissed you off. I hope Dan plays in London UK someday, as I am moving.

I'll keep in touch with the list.

Yo Hickvillians! Thanks for the cool site and please be so kind as to forward this message to the king of hip hisself for me, ok?

Hello Dan,

Just moved to the Philly area, where I see I've missed a recent show at the Tin Angel, shoot, catch the next..Billy sends his regards, just played a show with him in Heidelberg last week, coincidentally. When he heard the recent jazzier songs I brought over, he said, you know, you really ought to send some of this material to Dan..which I'd like to do, got a Po box for me, or an address?..just made a kinda jazzy CD with friends in NAshville, where I'd been a couple years, after Billy and i hit our customary two year wall in Europe..but all's well now, we may do some stuff later in the summer. Nuff said, love to hear from you, and send you a reckid. My address is 2302 Brookhaven Dr. Yardley. PA 19067, #215-369-3220. Hope you're well, drop a line..

all the best, Frank

I have been SO GLAD (beyond words) that since Shootin Straight, Dan is back...His music has added immeasurably to my life. GKG, Ph.D.

dynamite.

Saw him on the second show at McCabe's on May 13th (I believe). Anyhow front row center, as always, having seen him three times before. No regrets but that my wife wasn't able to make it. From now on I intend to see both his shows at McCabe's when he blows into town. I'll write a review of the show later; right now I have to bathe my four year old boy. Another thing...don't ever miss Susan Rabin!

...charming? I don't know, I'm just glad to hear that Dan's playing at my favorite Chicago venue, the Old Town School of Folk Music. I see a lot of shows there, and in fact saw Doc Watson last night and thought, "I gotta get Dan Hicks to play here!". Next thing I know, I got an e-mail from a friend telling me that Dan the Man is gonna be there 9/15...spooky.............

The last time I saw Dan was with the Hot Licks in Feb(?) of 1970 when he helped open the Family Dog on the Great Highway in San Francisco. 30 years later, he's still got it as evidenced by his triumphant return to Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City last night. A fine time was had by all...

Tonite at the Silver Dollar Room I'll be the "Prince of Good Cheer" so long as you don't steal my beer. My pork chop dinner will be there with me along with a group of friends who are mere neophytes. My trip to Hicksville was...

I stumbled on to Dan and his Hot Licks in the mid 70's while serving in the Army at a post in Colorado. What an absolute treat and release his music has been for me. When ever I need or feel like a pick-me-up I slide the cassette in. I was driving to work today and the Lord only knows what brought Dan to mind. But, there the thoughts of his music were and the tape wasn't handy. Is the the bugger still alive, I wondered? I had not heard anything about him in years. I've missed him. Well, I crawled on to the internet and decided to do a search. He lives! I'll be loading up on some of the recordings I don't have. Man, it's peculiar, isn't it, how there are tunes or images that remain with you for a lifetime. Dan's work has been on the edge of my thoughts for 2+ decades now. Hello again, old friend whom I have never met. Thanks, you folks, for the site.

My trip to Hicksville was...

some kindof voodoo. I scare myself when I realize how much I am still entertained by Dan Hicks. Have I been letting my thoughts run & haven't evolved? Or maybe once I got to Hicksville I didn't need to leave... Actually, a local news columnist recently discovered Dan Hicks for the first time, (I don't KNOW where he's been) & mentioned it in a column. I took out my vinyls, gave 'em a dusting, & have been humming my old favorites for a couple of weeks now. I thought I'd check out Dan's latest shennanigans for myself & was pleased to find this (well-executed) site. Yes, I'll buy the new CD. And, if Dan comes a little closer to Kansas, I'll venture out to a concert. Thanks for your hospitality. I enjoyed the visit. K.

My trip to Hicksville was...

Enlightening. I did not know there were so many Hicks fans out there, enough to at least keep a website and a career going.

My husband and I were together almost 2 years and had already known one another over 10 years when first we discovered we were both Dan fans. It just never came up until one of those - "Hey, I bet you'd like this music" conversations. Having met with puzzled stares from many of my friends who consider Mariah Carrey(urk) an "edgy" music choice, you can imagine my hesitation at bringing this up to my future(at the time) husband. We already talked about Ricky Lee J., Joni Mitchell, my love of folk, jazz and swing music and his long-time devotion to the less traditional form of bluegrass.. This was the next logical subject.

Glad you are all out there.

Cris and Selwyn/Atlanta Ga.

My trip to Hicksville was...

nice 'n mellow! Been a fan since I saw Dan and the gang on Carson back in '71 or so, saw the classic Hot Licks lineup twice during their heyday, even had a long message board discussion w/John Girton about 7-8 years ago. I've only seen Dan and the Warriors once (he don't seem to get down to south Fla very much).

Amazing how much of the good music I listen to has come into my life via hixdom. Artists from Bob Wills to Lambert Hendricks and Ross to Stephane Grappelli and everywhere in between: all from conversations with other Hicksvillians about the roots of Dan's music and "What else do you like".

I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life, but I had never heard of Dan Hicks until this year -- I was watching The Sopranos, and "Where's the Money?" was the theme music closing out that particular show (it was the episode in which Paulie is shaking down Christopher for tribute money -- hence the song!). I've been hooked on Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks ever since, especially the songs that prominently feature the Lickettes. Of course, now I forever associate Dan Hicks with the Sopranos, but that's sort of fitting, as both the characters in the show and Dan's music are so uniquely American. I wonder if Little Steven (Bruce Springsteen's guitarist, who also just happens to play Silvio on the show) has anything to do with picking the soundtrack music. Anyway, long story made short, I know a lot of other people *also* tape the Sopranos, and they'll likely become Dan Hicks fans as well!

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks just recently featured on my favourite radio show 'The Planet" way down here in Melbourne. Yep, I guess I thought Dan had passed into musicians heaven; after all, it's been thirty years since he made 'strikin it rich' my only DH vinyl recording still lovingly cared for and played now and again. more now than ever. Yes Dan, do come to Australia, you'll love it and so will we. jc

A great site and a great tribute to one of Americas most unique 20th century song writers. I've been a fan since the early 70's and listening to Hick's music always takes me back to "them good ol' days", past and present. I was quite surprised when, back in '94, a friend called to tell me he had just purchased "Shootin' Straight"; THE MASTER HAD RETURNED!!! Keep at it Dan, your music brings joy to many people. Hi: After many years of being a fan, I finally saw Mr. Hicks and Co. for the first time last August (2001) at Palookaville here in Santa Cruz. I can't add much too what I saw about this concert on "Show Reports" except to say: I had a good time! I regret missing the recent 60th Birthday concert for DH up in SF at the Warfield. I understand it was videotaped for future release, which is good news! FYI, the Palookaville club is now out of business. Hopefully when DH comes back to Santa Cruz, another suitable venue will be chosen at which to play... Happy Holidays! Best Regards! John B. Krug

I felt like a voyeur visting this website repeatedly, so I decided to register. After the San Francisco concert I kept wanting to keep it all fresh seeing pictures and reading everyone's comments. What an awesome show. I, too, have been a fan for over twenty years, yet never saw a live show which is weird because I go to a lot of concerts. I regret that but now am happily going to join the bandwagon of fans. It was strange to be in a huge room listening to Dan because I was forever used to being alone in my car or listening at home. Nobody back here has heard of him from what I've gathered, he's definetly a niche musician. What fun the Birthday bash was and I got to hug Dan at the after party and tell him that he's made the last twenty years of my life just a little sweeter. Thanks to all the folks who have added their comments to this website, and of course, to Kathy and Ken for their great website. Au Revoir.

I was turned on to Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks in the early 70s and never turned back! "Where's The Money" is in tatters now, so I had to replace it with the CD. All my other LPs of his are in mint condition, though. I saw Dan on his own in a tiny little smokey bar called STARS in downtown Philadelphia in the late 70s. I won't forget it. I sat right up against the stage and was sooooo thrilled and transported by the talent of this man. My life is different now, but....I STILL LOVE YA, DAN!!! You grabbed my musical heart at a young age and you've still got it.

Greetings from Melbourne, Australia - I first heard you through Beating the Heat about a year ago - love the style - is it you who plays the fiddle as well as guitar ? I actualy got the album through an EMusic download - trouble is you don't get no sleevenotes so I don't know who plays what - then I got Alive & Licking - your music is happy and funky - it's such a strange mix but it hits the spot with me - there's really nothing else like it - keep up the good work - and if you get the time send me an email down here in Aussie Cheerz Chris

I've bought Dan's "Most of Dan Hicks", "Alive and Lickin'", "Beatin' the Heat", and, most recently, "Where's The Money?" and have enjoyed 'em all! Heard some cuts from "Alive and Lickin'" on Jim Blum's show (WKSU, Ohio) and that attracted me to his lighthearted, genre-mixing sound (folk, blues, country, swing, etc). (There's a band (which doesn't play too much anymore) outside Boston named Cheap Champagne that was kinda like Dan and the Licks...funny lyrics, old-timey feel, funny patter between songs.) "Well I missed the toilet last night... Went all over the floor... Cleaned it up with my toothbrush Don't brush my teeth much anymore..." (from "Alive and Lickin'") :)

i remember seeing dh&thl open for van morrison in san diego Spring of 1972...said dan, "van will be out to rock his little heart out for you", upon which he fired a wad of bubblegum into the audience and continued to speak...about 3 seconds later, the gum wad came back flying, bouncing off dan's head, temporarily silencing him...worth the price of admission! has it really been 30 years?

The night before I was to be married in 1973, I saw Dan and the Hot Licks on some late night rock show, and knew what had to be done. The next day, during the ceremony, I pulled a piece of paper out of my back pocket and from it read the lyrics to "I Scare Myself." Some years later we caught up with Dan in Rodeo, California, at some converted movie theatre. Before the show, or perhaps during the opening act, which if memory serves was Lawrence "Amphetamine Gazelle" Hammond, I saw Dan slouching in a theatre seat. I went over to him and told him the above story about my wedding. To be honest, I'm not sure he was in shape to hear any stories that night, which was probably emphasized when the concert itself lasted only a few numbers before he gave up and left the stage. We did get Naomi Ruth Eisenberg's autograph, though. I'm glad Dan Hicks is still around and making music. And next year my wife and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary. I still scare myself sometimes.

That does it -- gonna drive up and catch you guys in Healdsburg on Sept 6!

Once again I flew from Denver (to Seattle) to see Dan and the Hot licks. It was a beautiful and hot day in Seattle, which is rare, and Dan was sweating. There was I'd say about 300 or more people there to see them. The show was not very long, but it was great. I got to meet all of the band, and got all of there autographs. this is one of the nicest bands I ever met. I have been a fan of Dan Hicks since I have listened to them on K-Fat in Gilroy Ca. I have seen Dan Hicks four times, and this show today was up to par. But not as good as the Birthday Bash, I was there too. That show was one of a kind. nevertheless I still love Dan Hicks and all the music that hes put out all these years. And all I want to say is thanks for all the great songs. Take care, Dustin Fountain, Denver, CO.

Hi all Hick fans. Once agen I flew all the way from Denver to Englewood Co. to see Dan Hicks, and the Hot Licks at the Gothic Theatre (9-16-02). Actually I drove because it was only down the street. The place was beautiful, the sound was Great!! Dan was filling festive. After he broke a string or two, they got down to swingin. They swung for about an hour, then thay stoped. Dammit!! I hate that!! It was great fun anyway. I seen Dan all over the country. The Birth Day Bash was still the best! By the way, A big bird named "Dan" told me that a new DVD will be in my stocking this Christmas if I'm not naughty. So, I'm being GOOD!! :) I LOVE THAT GUY!! Dusty Fountain

Wow, should have checked here beore. My first and only trip to Hicksville was 7/4/73 or so in Tucson, have not seen him since. However recently I have become a big fan of a band called Railroad Earth. Especially after a private party in Santa cruz in September. Anyway, came upon me a few weeks later listening to a recording of that show, that at times they have the Hicksville swing thing almost going.(and a Brombergesque flair at times, as well as Grateful Dead) Ok for the important part, anybody trade any Dan Hicks? Just received my first show today, something from 9/91. Probably radio. Anyway, my list is on etree which is down for the moment. But if your interested in a trade or bp please let me know. Hi hipsters! I must confess to having been a closet hipster groovin' on Dan Hicks, the Manhattan Transfer and R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders when everybody else was gettin' stoned on Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Big Brother & the Holding Company. I was also heavy into Progressive Rock and this was my other side. I saw Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks perform live at Doug Weston's Troubadour in West Los Angeles, being a California guy, sometime in the early 1970s, and it was a great show! Yesindeedy! A good time was had by all. Loved his sexy "Lickettes", the gals added such a dynamic and romantic mood to the music. Thank you all! I collected all his albums. Loved 'em, still have 'em and still love 'em! DH & His Hot Licks are classic cabaret swing-jive folk-jazz at its finest! Reminds me of the classic swing n' string bands popular back in the juke joints in the 1930s and 1940s my dad told me about. Cheers & beers, Don "D.J." Long

Real treat visiting your page and reading some fan notes. Saw Dan for the first time at The Jabberwocky in the early '70s with my buddy Jack. Dan got shitfaced but still was a trouper. Saw him 2 nights in a row there. Then caught him at Red Creek in Rochester about 10 years ago. His guitar player had the flu and projectile vomited all over the stage. No one came quick enough to clean up and Dan started screaming. It was a real scene. I've seen Dan and the various bands almost a dozen times over the years and he is always a treat to see and hear. I last saw him in the fall at the Montage Grill (he'll be there again in March 20023!) and he's aged well and never sounded better. A real treasure that remains out of the mainstream.

I want to thank you for your contribution to music. You are one of the best. I didn`t want to see the breakup in "73", but after all this is life. I have been telling my friends for many years about your music. Well, I`am going to hunt down a copy of " Last Train To Hicksville" and start promoting you to my friends that were not paying attention in the late 60`s and early 70`s. Thank You!

What a great site! Believe it or not, I'm a longtime Dan Hicks fan from Germany. Unfortunately I've never got the chance to see Dan & his amazing Hot Licks live on stage. Anyway, I hope I could attend a show on my first trip to California this year! That would be fantastic. All the Best to all Hixters whereever you are! I grew up musically with Dan Hicks music, and just how big impact that music had on me, I never really understood way back then. I do now. The album I more or less destroyed for playing so much was "Last train to Hicksville". What an album! I never heard anything like it before or after. I nowadays play in a western swing band (Sweden´s only) "Clayfeet Stompers", and listening to his music today, 30 years later or so, makes everything fit together. I understand where I got my style. From listening to Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks! Kenneth

Just saw Dan & the band at Newburyport City Hall in Mass. GREAT show! The crowd cracked up when Dan started singing "How Can I Miss You" in a Dylan voice. Superb long cuts like "I Scare Myself", and I like the new tune (something like "I'm Hungry But I Don't Feel Like Eating"). Would have liked to have heard "My Cello" or his take on "Piano Has Been Drinking" but hey, I've got live versions of that on "Alive and Lickin'" anyway! Wow, I last saw Dan with his Boogie Woogie Boys about 1978 in Berkeley and lost touch since then. In the mean time I've entertained and confused my kids with a command of all the lyrics to every song from the early albums. I saw the link to your site from the Belly up tavern schedule and just wanted to say that I'll be there in Solana Beach to introduce myself again to some of the finest songs ever crafted by a true California Master.

..just love you Dan, like I said some weeks ago, right now I´m trying to convince my entire surroundings that you´re the greatest! And what a great site! Lots of fun, this is how it should be. Most of the time you find homepages really dull. But not this one. It feels as though you´re going on a vacation, to the carrabians or something (love the moustache). Well,Dan, keep on doing that fantastic one-of-a-kind-music! By the way, when are you coming to Malmö, Dan? If you do, we´ll be watching you (Clayfeet Stompers) or,if you want to know what we sound like, tune in on mp3.com. Kenneth

Unlike the jerk who stumbled on your site and posted here two days ago, I have been a real fan for many years. Though I have to admit I do not have all of your albums, my interest in your music started way back in 1974 or so. I was in a trio in NC. We played several of your songs. Since then, "swing" music has been an interesting pleasure (and curse) in my life, and I have reluctantly (and with difficulty) had to ignore its influence while writing songs for many artists including Ray Charles, George Strait, George Jones, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, and many others. I moved to Nashville in 1978. Now as a professional songwriter, producer, and singer myself, I just wanted you (Dan)to know that you were an undeniable influence on me....so much that...."I Scare Myself"...(love that song). Take care, and I am truly sorry I missed your show in Nashville last year. I won't miss the next one.

i first heard dan's music in 1971. i have been loving it ever since. a few days ago my 7 year old daughter (also a Hicks fan) asked me what band i like the best. she let me pick two & dan was one of them (jim Kweskin was the other). i can't belive i missed his tour (twice!) the last few years. i saw dan about 1973 or 74 in boston (with out Hot Licks). that concert was billed as Hicks & Hot Licks but dan played solo. it was very interesting!maybe band was breaking up then. thanks for web site & thanks dan for so much Entertainment!

I started listening to Dan in the 70's. Tripped from Virginia to Montana with a bunch of albums and turned lots of people on to the Hot Licks along the way. Been working in Georgia 20 years, raising a kid for 15, and when I found this website my son said "Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, They're really good." I guess we will have to fit in the show in Salt Lake when we drive back from our yearly trip to Montana for the 4th of July. Love the music and the website.

What a pleasant surprise running across this site. My wife & I have been in hibernation for years now & never knew that Dan was still out & about. In 1972 I bought my 1st Hicks album-actually it was an 8-track-& played the hell out of that thing. Living in Europe in 1982 getting to know my future wife discovered she was a DH & HL's fan from the 70's as well & she then had a cassette of Where's The Money. We sort of lost touch with their music, then in '91 happened across Striking it Rich in a tiny backstreet used record shop in Taiwan, and then about '95 found a cassette of Dan Hicks(one that's not listed on your discography, by the way) in a small town in Alabama. So over the years those few albums have been in our favorite's selection, they were played & replayed, recorded & re-recorded & we never realized that Dan was still going. Gotta make up for lost time & try & run down some of those subsequent LPs. Wow, ain't the internet great!

Dear Mr. Hicks, What a pleasure it was to find you and your band alive and well at the Borderline in London, England, last Saturday. I confess that I am not your most ardent fan, having only heard barely a handful of your songs since '70, but I had to satisfy my curiosity and see you live. ( I remember long ago reading an interview with a musician called Don Nix, who at that time kept being mistaken for you - I think it was the similar-sounding name, don't you? - 'Still got the hot licks?' people would ask and he'd say 'Yeah'.) What a great show! What great tunes you play and what a dry sense of humour you exhibit, Mr. Hicks. I must endeavour to seek out your albums, hear and even buy them, soon. Thanks again to you and The Hot Licks for a very enjoyable evening.
