Subject: Re: [hix] Philly Show

Horace and Hixters,
I was at the Tin Angel early show, but just haven't had a chance to post until now.

My buddy Doc Vinyl and I had dinner at Serrano's on the first floor of the club and joined the throng heading up the narrow stairway to the Tin Angel just before show time. As we were waiting to be admitted, Dan and Tom squeezed down the steps, probably headed for dinner. A few folks said Hi as he went by and Dan responded with "Oh, I'm not him. He couldn't make it so they sent some other guy instead". Well, maybe you had to be there.

The SRO crowd was in a real good mood and there was a lot of story swapping about Dan's Philly-area performances for the last 30 years. The opening act was a young gent named 'Langhorne Slim', topped by a tan beaver derby, sang comic ballads with a straight face and a loud gravelly voice. Sort of a cross between Loudon Wainwright III, and Tom Waits. He played passable guitar, and was accompanied by another young fellow (I missed his name) that played banjo wonderfully. His mom, sitting on a stool across from our table yelled 'WOOO, WOOO' at the top of her voice the entire set. :-) He really got the crowd warmed up for Dan.

Dan and company came out for their set to thunderous applause. This might have contributed to Dan's good humor and general air of congeniality during the set. He (and the rest of the band) were loose and groovin' right from the start.

The Tin Angel is a tough club to play for a band that size. The room is long and narrow with the stage at one end. The stage is only about 8' x 8' so it was real cramped up there. Dan and the Lickettes still managed some tricky dance steps.

All in all, it was a great evening. Unfortunately, I neglected to bring pen and paper to record the set list. I checked the stage after the show hoping Dan had left it behind, but nada. I listed the songs I remember hearing but I'm sure I missed some, and might have imagined others. If anyone else was there please feel free to correct my list or impressions.
